WARNING: This is not a romance novel. It is a young-adult tragedy. There is mature content (sex and violence). Reader discretion is advised. Sara Krason, still reeling from the loss of her mother and still suffering from the psychological scars caused by her classmates bullying her over her weight, just wants to finish her last year of high school in peace, but that is made impossible when she starts tutoring Jason Pruitt, an arrogant, handsome high-school football star, who, unbeknownst to her, has made a bet with his friends that he can win her affections, the shrewish, homely, overweight girl no one at school likes.

Book Flannery O'Connor in the Age of Terrorism PDF Free

Flannery O'Connor in the Age of Terrorism PDF
By:Avis Hewitt
Published on 2010-07-28 by Univ. of Tennessee Press

In any age, humans wrestle with apparently inexorable forces. Today, we face the threat of global terrorism. In the aftermath of September 11, few could miss sensing that a great evil was at work in the world. In Flannery O’Connor’s time, the threats came from different sources—World War II, the Cold War, and the Korean conflict—but they were just as real. She, too, lived though a “time of terror.” The first major critical volume on Flannery O’Connor’s work in more than a decade, Flannery O’Connor in the Age of Terrorism explores issues of violence, evil, and terror—themes that were never far from O’Connor’s reach and that seem particularly relevant to our present-day setting. The fifteen essays collected here offer a wide range of perspectives that explore our changing views of violence in a post-9/11 world and inform our understanding of a writer whose fiction abounds in violence. Written by both established and emerging scholars, the pieces that editors Avis Hewitt and Robert Donahoo have selected offer a compelling and varied picture of this iconic author and her work. Included are comparisons of O’Connor to 1950s writers of noir literature and to the contemporary American novelist Cormac McCarthy; cultural studies that draw on horror comics of the Cold War and on Fordism and the American mythos of the automobile; and pieces that shed new light on O’Connor’s complex religious sensibility and its role in her work. While continuing to speak fresh truths about her own time, O’Connor’s fiction also resonates deeply with the postmodern sensibilities of audiences increasingly distant from her era—readers absorbed in their own terrors and sense of looming, ineffable threats. This provocative new collection presents O’Connor’s work as a touchstone for understanding where our culture has been and where we are now. With its diverse approaches, Flannery O’Connor in the Age of Terrorism will prove useful not only to scholars and students of literature but to anyone interested in history, popular culture, theology, and reflective writing. Avis Hewitt has published articles in Flannery O’Connor Review, Christianity and Literature, and Renascence. She is associate professor of English at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. Robert Donahoo is professor of English at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He has published articles in Flannery O’Connor Review, Literature and Belief, Journal of Contemporary Thought, and Journal of the Short Story in English.

Book Humanizing Pedagogy Through HIV and AIDS Prevention PDF Free

Humanizing Pedagogy Through HIV and AIDS Prevention PDF
By:American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education
Published on 2015-12-03 by Routledge

This book explores the power of educators to serve as HIV and AIDS prevention agents. The definitive text represents the work of a distinguished panel of teacher educators and health scientists who identify core information and skills effective educators of HIV and AIDS prevention should learn as they are prepared to attend to the academic and human needs of students. It assigns to teachers, in the US and abroad, the novel role of prevention agents, given their extraordinary ability to access and affect young people -- to influence their behavior. Humanizing Pedagogy considers the social, economic, racial, gender and other variables that impact the prevention of HIV and AIDS. The authors collectively assert that the process of preventing HIV and AIDS, when it considers historic and social context, can compel educators to serve not only as practitioners of knowledge, but as community agents of health and well being. Attending to HIV and AIDS issues advances the capacity and ability of educators to see and attend to the complete learner. Humanizing Pedagogy is a single volume resource for educators, in the US and abroad, interested in attending to the whole needs of the learner-and saving lives.

Book Educating Children with Autism PDF Free

Educating Children with Autism PDF
By:Committee on Educational Interventions for Children with Autism,National Research Council,Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education,Board on Children, Youth and Families,Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences
Published on 2001-10-11 by National Academies Press

Autism is a word most of us are familiar with. But do we really know what it means? Children with autism are challenged by the most essential human behaviors. They have difficulty interacting with other people-often failing to see people as people rather than simply objects in their environment. They cannot easily communicate ideas and feelings, have great trouble imagining what others think or feel, and in some cases spend their lives speechless. They frequently find it hard to make friends or even bond with family members. Their behavior can seem bizarre. Education is the primary form of treatment for this mysterious condition. This means that we place important responsibilities on schools, teachers and children's parents, as well as the other professionals who work with children with autism. With the passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1975, we accepted responsibility for educating children who face special challenges like autism. While we have since amassed a substantial body of research, researchers have not adequately communicated with one another, and their findings have not been integrated into a proven curriculum. Educating Children with Autism outlines an interdisciplinary approach to education for children with autism. The committee explores what makes education effective for the child with autism and identifies specific characteristics of programs that work. Recommendations are offered for choosing educational content and strategies, introducing interaction with other children, and other key areas. This book examines some fundamental issues, including: How children's specific diagnoses should affect educational assessment and planning How we can support the families of children with autism Features of effective instructional and comprehensive programs and strategies How we can better prepare teachers, school staffs, professionals, and parents to educate children with autism What policies at the federal, state, and local levels will best ensure appropriate education, examining strategies and resources needed to address the rights of children with autism to appropriate education. Children with autism present educators with one of their most difficult challenges. Through a comprehensive examination of the scientific knowledge underlying educational practices, programs, and strategies, Educating Children with Autism presents valuable information for parents, administrators, advocates, researchers, and policy makers.

Every Friday, we drive two and a half hours to Bradington to where my sister Marla goes to residential school for the deaf. I told Mom that when I go to Bradington, I hoped I would get to stay on the fourth floor just like Marla. Mom looked at me like I was crazy. ”Silly,” she signed. “You no go Bradington. You not deaf.” Of course I knew I could hear, but what did that have to do with anything? Jade is the only hearing member in her family. Her older sister gets to go to the school for the deaf headed by her grandfather Gilbert, but Jade feels left out. Marla thinks her little sister is a pest and a brat. When they end up on the same softball team for the summer, neither is happy about it. Jade, the smallest player on the team, is assigned to be the catcher. It looks like it’s going to be a long season. As sisters, they are often at loggerheads, but as team mates Jade and Marla have to find ways to get along. Book Twelve Patients PDF Free

Twelve Patients PDF
By:Eric Manheimer
Published on 2012-07-10 by Grand Central Publishing

The inspiration for the NBC drama New Amsterdam and in the spirit of Oliver Sacks, this intensely involving memoir from a medical director of a major NYC hospital looks poignantly at patients' lives and reveals the author's own battle with cancer. Using the plights of twelve very different patients--from dignitaries at the nearby UN, to supermax prisoners at Riker's Island, to illegal immigrants, and Wall Street tycoons--Dr. Eric Manheimer |offers far more than remarkable medical dramas: he blends each patient's personal experiences with their social implications| (Publishers Weekly). Manheimer is not only the medical director of the country's oldest public hospital, but he is also a patient. As the book unfolds, the narrator is diagnosed with cancer, and he is forced to wrestle with the end of his own life even as he struggles to save the lives of others.
